Trail running seems to be gaining some serious traction lately, and for good reason. I’ve been running on trails myself for the last 25 years, before shoe companies ever really made trail specific shoes, and I can honestly say that there was always something that drew me there. I think I’m finally starting to figure it out.
Predictable is boring. Living a life in which you know every single thing coming your way would be Hell on Earth. Running is no different! Hitting the trails offers the unique experience of never knowing if or when you’re going to completely eat shit and land on your face. And that’s AWESOME.
I’d encourage all of my runners reading this to find a trail this week and take the plunge. Don’t worry about pace or distance, just get out of your comfort zone. Don’t worry about what shoes you’re wearing. People have been running on trails long before “trail” shoes existed. If you’re a seasoned trail runner, find a new one somewhere close by and get after it.
Let’s bring it back to a life metaphor.
Predictable is BORING. If you’re anything like me, you might be just a tad frustrated by the state of things the last year and counting. Well, I’m here to tell you that the crazy, unpredictable shit going down is AWESOME. Think about the best rollercoaster you’ve ever been on. That SOB most likely threw you all over the place. That’s a life well lived. Embrace the unpredictable. Run the trails, and embrace the rocks and roots that life throws your way.
